Newborn is the most-requested age in the reborn category and the easiest to get wrong. This page covers the preemie-to-full-newborn scale, what each size actually weighs once material enters the picture, and which construction fits a collector, a gift or a care setting.
“Newborn” in this category means a doll proportioned like a baby in its first weeks: a large head relative to the body, short limbs, curled posture and unfocused features. It is a near-exact match to the common 18″ / 45–46 cm scale.
Preemie dolls are smaller and thinner, modelled on babies born early — usually 6″ to 12″ (15–30 cm). They read as fragile in a way some buyers find moving and others find distressing, so they are a taste call rather than a default. Our reborn toddler dolls sit at the opposite end of the range.
Length is the headline number, weight is the one you feel. Measured across our own line:
| Size | Length | Vinyl | Solid silicone |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12″ | 30 cm | 340–1,400 g | — |
| 16″ | 40–41 cm | 690–852 g | 2,430 g |
| 18″ | 45–46 cm | 760–1,150 g | 2,965–3,630 g |
| 22″ | 55–56 cm | 950–1,370 g | — |
A full-body 18″ silicone doll at 3,630 g genuinely feels like holding a newborn; the vinyl version at 760–1,150 g feels like a doll. That gap is the single biggest decision in this category.
Solid silicone gives the weight and the squeeze. It is the collector and gift choice, and it is what people usually mean when they ask for a doll that “looks real”. Downside: it is heavy, it does not like direct sun, and it costs several times more.
Vinyl and cloth body are lighter, cheaper, water-washable and far more forgiving in daily handling. For therapy dolls in care settings, where the doll gets carried, laundered and passed between residents, this is almost always the correct specification. The head-to-head is on our silicone vs vinyl page.
Most newborn dolls are bought to be looked at or given. If it will live on a shelf, prioritise paint grade and rooting quality over weight — artist-grade finishing is what survives close inspection. If it will be held, weight and softness matter more than fine detail nobody sees at arm’s length.
Gift buyers overwhelmingly choose 18″, full body or cloth body, wrapped and boxed. See the full reborn guide for how the finishing process works.
Newborn-scale dolls are the standard choice for dementia and elderly care programmes: the size cues recognition and the weight triggers the holding reflex that the therapy is built around. For this use we recommend cloth-body vinyl around 950–1,150 g — heavy enough to feel real, light enough to hold for an hour, and machine-washable between residents.
Care providers can order to the quantities they need, with hygiene documentation. Only HF-series models have a minimum order quantity; other series have no minimum order quantity. For more detail, the therapy dolls page covers selection, cleaning protocols and bulk supply.
Decide the use first, then the material, then the paint grade — in that order. Buyers who start from the material usually overspend on weight they do not need or under-buy on finishing that was the whole point.
Compare models before committing to a run: our reborn doll catalogue lists the models you can enquire about, with price and shipping confirmed for your destination. For production, our team will spec against your price band and target weight — including telling you when the cheaper material is right.
