Vinyl is the material that makes this category accessible — and the one that makes institutional supply possible. Lighter, cheaper, wipeable and forgiving, it accounts for the majority of what any manufacturer actually ships.
Vinyl dolls are produced by slush moulding: a measured quantity of liquid PVC is poured into a heated mould, rotated to coat the walls, then cured and emptied. The result is a hollow shell that takes paint well and can be produced at high volume with consistent results — which is why vinyl dominates the category commercially.
Roughly two-thirds of our own catalogue is vinyl in some form. It is not the premium material, but it is the one that lets a brand hit a retail price point, and the one that survives daily handling in a care setting.
Soft vinyl uses a more flexible formulation, giving limbs and head a slight give that feels considerably less rigid in the hand. It is the better choice for anything that will be picked up.
Full vinyl is firmer and cheaper to produce, and it holds fine sculpt detail marginally better. It reads more like a traditional doll on contact. Where a doll is primarily for display, full vinyl is a perfectly sound specification; where it will be held, soft vinyl is worth the small premium. Both are finished identically on the paint line.
A cloth-body doll pairs a vinyl head and limbs with a soft fabric torso, weighted with beads or pellets. It is the standard construction for three reasons: it is lighter, it poses more naturally because the torso flexes, and it is far easier to dress — the soft body compresses where rigid vinyl does not.
At 18″ our cloth-body pieces weigh 950–1,150 g, against a full-body silicone doll of the same size at 2,965–3,630 g. For children and for care settings, that difference decides the purchase. It is also the reason cloth-body is our recommended specification for therapy programmes.
Vinyl is genuinely robust. It does not tear the way silicone can, it wipes clean with mild soap and water, and it tolerates being dressed, undressed and handled repeatedly. In an institutional setting that reliability matters more than realism.
Two cautions. Vinyl can discolour under prolonged direct sunlight, so store dolls out of it. And unregulated cheap PVC is the usual source of the chemical smell buyers complain about — our dolls are tested to ASTM F963 (US) and EN71 (EU) requirements, and we name the applicable standard on the quote rather than sending a generic compliance pack.
The short version: silicone wins on realism and weight, vinyl wins on price, durability and maintenance. Silicone is solid and squeezable and reads as skin; vinyl is hollow, firm and reads — honestly — as a doll.
The decision is almost always made by the use case rather than by preference. Collectors and gift buyers generally want silicone. Retailers hitting a price band, and any buyer whose dolls will be handled daily, are better served by vinyl. The full comparison is on our silicone vs vinyl page.
This is where vinyl earns its place. Consistent moulding makes it possible to produce at scale with reliable quality, and the material cost allows price points that silicone simply cannot reach. We run vinyl across 6″ to 26″ in soft vinyl, full vinyl and cloth-body constructions.
Wholesale orders are quoted EXW or FOB, with your own labelling, packaging and hangtags. Only HF-series models have a minimum order quantity; other series have no minimum order quantity. Custom sculpts are available on the same terms, and your tooling stays private. See wholesale & OEM/ODM to start, or read the reborn doll price guide for how the bands work.

FAQ
A doll whose head and limbs are slush-moulded from liquid PVC, producing a hollow painted shell. It is the most widely produced doll construction because it is light, durable, wipeable and inexpensive to manufacture at volume.
A vinyl head and limbs attached to a soft fabric torso weighted with beads or pellets. Lighter than a solid body, more natural to pose, and much easier to dress. Our 18″ cloth-body dolls weigh 950–1,150 g.
Yes, very. Vinyl resists tearing, wipes clean with mild soap and water, and tolerates repeated dressing and handling, which is why it suits care settings. Prolonged direct sunlight can discolour it, so store dolls out of sun.
Substantially. The material and the moulding process cost far less, and the finishing is quicker, so vinyl can reach retail price points that silicone cannot. That is why most dolls produced commercially, including most of our own catalogue, are vinyl.
Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry it. Avoid solvents and abrasive cleaners. Clothing should be washed separately according to its own care label, and the doll kept out of direct sunlight between uses.
Yes — in soft vinyl, full vinyl or cloth-body constructions from 6″ to 26″, with your own labelling and packaging applied, EXW or FOB. Only HF-series models have a minimum order quantity; other series have no minimum order quantity.
